Origins of Real Life Studios

Real life studios started as just an idea. The inspiration came from reading an article about a Farmville player spending northwards of a few thousand dollars in-game. This created a question of what the world would be like if the assets purchased in a game like Farmville were connected to real-life financial assets. If an apple tree in Farmville carried real value, like an Apple stock. This thought sparked a bigger idea of how games can impact real life.

Games are our past, and they are our future. As early as 7000 years ago, humans found ways to entertain ourselves through games. Whether they are games with sticks and stones, board games or mobile games today, they are a staple for entertainment. We’ve always seen games as a way to keep ourselves occupied and a way to have fun. It isn’t until more recently where game mechanics have been introduced into the world of user experiences and user interface, where games have started to become more.

Concept of what we were trying to build for a game

In my previous role, I helped build a game. It was a mobile application for employers to help increase retention of their employees. What made this app different, was how we leveraged game mechanics to help users stay engaged. By leveraging points, goals and rewards we saw massive success. We helped reduce some of our customer’s churn from over 130% (meaning you’d have to hire 13 employees each year to fill 10 spots) to 30%. Not only that, we also saw substantial increases with on-time arrivals and decreases in missed shifts and also a 10% increase in targeted sales. Just by implementing something fun, we were able to see massive changes in people’s behavior with very little investment from employers. There was so much impact with such a crude application of games, but there is so much more impact if the focus is on the games itself.

What we would have wanted this to look like

Real Life Studios prioritizes a game-first experience and hopes that we can impact people through games. We want to have a way to tie real-life into the games we play everyday. We want to seamlessly incorporate everyday life into the games we play, rather than make games from everyday life. Our first game, Sort Odyssey, is an attempt to help connect life and games by having real-world rewards through playing a fun puzzle game. We plan to have people make money by playing a fun game, and hope that this will be the first step to creating a world where games can impact real life.
