The power of games
Games have immense power, transporting us to new worlds, challenging our intellect, and connecting us online. They inspire, educate, and provide an escape from daily stress. Games are a significant form of entertainment and art, pushing boundaries with advancing technology. Excitingly, games will continue to shape our world. Today, games have been utilized in 3 ways:
1. Games as a mode of entertainment and storytelling
2. Games as a way to connect people together
3. Games as a tool to influence people’s behavior
Let’s explore these ideas and see how games have evolved and changed over time.
1. Games have always been an mode of entertainment. It was always a way for families or people to pass the time. It is for the kids to indulge in their creativity to visualize situations or have teens think how they can strategically place themselves to win. It is easy to speculate that games themselves allow people to engage in something, either physically or mentally, and have fun. This is especially useful in the past where technology and access to toys were not as accessible. Today, games have evolved from not just entertainment, but have also become a tool for storytelling. It is easy to see how both games and storytelling can come hand-in-hand when they are both based upon the idea of entertainment.
2. Games as a way to connect people together has a long history. Games have traditionally been a way for people to come together to play and pass time. Whether it simple stone and stick games from the past or it is video games today, engaging with people and bringing people together is another purpose of games. Many of these games require collaboration and communication for people to reach a goal together.
Today, we see the same types of behaviors in video games. In popular games like Fortnite or Roblox, the main thesis falls upon the community. People from all backgrounds come together to play with each other. Whether they are friends who have not seen each other in a long time or newly made internet friends, video games are starting to enable a type of communication and relationship building that is a challenge exclusively to this new century.
We can quickly see that this type of video game is becoming more popular, with the legacy games such as World of Warcraft and more modern games like Call of Duty, the central theme of these games are centered more around community. Whether these are based upon real-life friendships or virtually build relationships, the future is becoming more dependent on these virtual collaborative activities.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
3. Games as a tool is a relatively interesting but not new idea. In modern day, it is easy to think about games as a form of entertainment or way to bring people together. We associate sports games as a form of entertainment, but don’t necessarily think of them when we talk about ‘games’ specifically. However, games like sport games or hunting games are also extensions of games themselves. We see these types of games as a tool to help refine a person’s skill or prowess to become a better competitor. Although we do not associate games today as a tool with the introduction of esports, it is very much possible to still use games as a tool. Strategy, reaction times are just a few things that one can think about with some of the games that exist today. Today, games as a tool to refine skills and games are rare. It is because humans have not completely bridged the virtual gap. We have seen solutions that bridge education and games, but aside from that there is a massive gap.
Real life studios really believes that there are more than one way to bridge the gap. Label Legends is a mobile game that aims to bridge that gap by making games more real. Instead of a game that sits exclusively virtually, we are trying to bring that into reality. Making the actions, choices and decisions that are made virtually become something that impacts everyday life. We hope that Label Legends and our approach will allow you to not only bridge that gap, but earn real-life rewards in exchange for people’s work online.
